The Poodle is considered by many to be the royalty of the canine world. These dogs are highly intelligent, gracious, loyal and loving. They excel at numerous tasks and they are among the most common winners at dog shows. However, despite their toy like appearance, these dogs can also do actual work. In fact, Poodles were initially water retrievers. Later on, their image started being associated with royalty. Nevertheless, despite the fact that they are now considered to be toy dogs, the royal air of these dogs shows that they have not forgotten their noble history. Poodle Picture Poodle Picture Origin Despite the fact that the Poodle is nowadays a companion breed, it was in fact developed for rough tasks such as hunting waterfowl. The breed was developed my mixing several types of water dogs. The word poodle is derived from the German word "pudel", which means splash in water. These dogs are also called Caniche, a French word derived from chien canard, which means duck dog. The sophisticated hairstyle that most of these dogs have also has rich historical roots. The shorter hair was meant to allow the dog to move freely in water while the longer hair was meant to protect the dog's vital organs from the cold water. However, since this is such an old breed, establishing its actual roots is impossible. Some theories suggest that the Pudle's ancestor is the North African Barbet while others suggest that it descends from Asian herding dogs. It is also very hard to determine the exact period when this breed was developed. Numerous Egyptian and Roman artifacts that date as far back as 100 BC show a type of dog which is very similar to the Poodle but it is possible for the breed to be even older than this. As far as the development of the varieties goes, it is believed that the Toy Poodles and the Miniature Poodles emerged somewhere around 1400. This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1886. Despite the fact that the Poodle is nowadays a companion breed, it was in fact developed for rough tasks such as hunting waterfowl. The breed was developed my mixing several types of water dogs. Personality

Despite the fact that they have a dignified attitude, Poodles are not at all pretentious or unfriendly. In fact, these are people dogs who love to spend as much time as possible with their families. Furthermore, they enjoy games and learning new tricks. They are loving and loyal but also mischievous and goofy. When it comes to small dogs, a lot of people make the mistake of treating them like babies and spoiling them. Such an attitude can be perceived as weakness by a small dog who will try to take over as the family’s pack leader. These dogs also have a lot of energy so it is advised to exercise them daily. Smaller varieties can waste a lot of their energy indoors, but the Standard Poodle should always be taken out for a daily walk. These dogs are also very protective of their families which is why they are not very fond of strangers. However, if they are socialized from an early age, Poodles can be very friendly. Furthermore, they can even make for good watchdogs as they tend to signal the approach of strangers through a warning bark. Given the fact that they are highly intelligent, these dogs can be easily trained. However, it is important for the training to be versatile so that the dog does not lose interest in it.

Health

Since they were bread in order to endure cold water, these dogs are very adaptable to various weather conditions. However, keep in mind that these dogs should not live outdoors as they are people dogs who love to live inside, close to their family. They are generally rather healthy, but they too can develop certain medical conditions such as hip dysplasia (with a score of fair or better), elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and von Willebrand’s disease, Addison’s Disease, Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, Cushings Disease (Hyperadrenocorticism), Epilepsy, Hypothyroidism, Legg-Perthes Disease, Patellar Luxation, Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) and Von Willebrand’s Disease. In order to make sure that you are getting a healthy puppy, make sure to buy it from a good breeder who can show you medical clearances for both of the puppy’s parents. needless to say, Poodles suffering from genetic disorders should never be breaded.

Care

As we mentioned above, Poodles are very adaptable so they can be just as happy living in apartment as they would be living in a house with a yard. As these dogs are both intelligent and very energetic, they you must engage them in activities as often as possible. As far as feeding goes, the recommended quantity depends on the dog’s size. Generally, a standard variety should receive about 1,5-3 cups of dry food per day, while the smaller varieties should eat about 1/4 to 1 cup. In order to make sure that the dog is in good shape, take a good look at it. Its ribs should not be visible at first sight, but you should be able to feel them when grabbing the dog by its middle. In order to maintain your dog’s good health, you should also check its ears regularly and brush its teeth twice per week.

Coat

Surprisingly enough, despite the fact that they are quite fluffy, The Poodle breed does not shed and some dogs are even hypoallergenic. A poodle’s coat can be white, black, blue, gray, brown, silver, cream or apricot. The curly hair is very high maintenance and must be trimmed regularly and it can be styled in numerous ways. Even is the coat is clipped short, it still needs to be bathed and brushed regularly. If you plan on enrolling your Pudle in dog shows, make sure to consult the styling options approved by the AKC. In order to make sure that your dog will have a perfect appearance, you should wipe his face daily (especially around the eyes) with an alcohol free pet wipe. This is necessary because Poodles have weepy eyes and the ones with a light colored coat often feature tear stains.

Friendliness

As we mentioned above, Poodles are very loving with their family members, and with a little patient, they will also grow fond of the strangers that you introduce to them. They can make great play companions for children but like it goes with all dogs, they should not be left unsupervised with very small children or children who don’t know how to interact with dogs. Poodles that are socialized from an early age, can even get along well with other pets. However, an socialized dog who is used to being the only pet in the family, might take a while to get used to a new pet.

Ease of training

As we mentioned above, Poodles are highly intelligent and intuitive, so they will have no problem understanding what you want for them. However, their high intelligence also means that they need diversity in order to remain engaged in a certain activity. The best way to train a Poodle is to provide it with a diverse training routine.
