Health

Golden Retrievers are strong dogs which live for about 10-12 years. However, due to the fact that they were mixed with various dog breeds, they are prone to certain diseases. In order to minimize the risk of these diseases, you must but the puppy from a certified dog breeder who can provide medical clearance for the puppy’s parents. The cleareances should come from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, the Auburn University for thrombopatia and the Canine Eye Registry Foundation. The only way to prevent these conditions are to check the dog’s health regularly. Furthermore, if the puppy came with proper medical clearances, it is unlikely for him to develop serious diseases. As far as the less serious health problems go, most of them are treatable.

Care

As we mentioned above, Goldens have a lot of stamina and need to be exercised regularly. It is advised to avoid overfeeding the dog or feeding him countless diet supplements, which in excess can cause health problems. However, the physical exercise should not be forced on the dogs, particularly during the first two weeks of life, when their bones are still sensitive. The exercise routines should continue to be mild until the dog is at least two years old. Goldens also like to swim, so if you live near the beach, make sure to take your Golden with you for a swim. This dog breed requires not only daily exercise, but also regular socialization with other people and pets. They do great indoors, as long as they are taken for a walk at least once a day.

Coat

As the name suggests, the main color of this breed’s coat is golden with seldom white spots on the chest. Despite the fact that their coat is quite dense, they don’t have high grooming needs. Generally, a weekly combing and a once a mount trimming between feet pads and around the ears is more than enough.

Friendliness

It is a well known fact that most dogs love children, but some dogs can often be bothered by the commotion and noise caused by kids. However, this is not the case of the Golden Retriever dog which thrives on commotion. Nevertheless, if you have children, you should teach them the proper way to approach dogs. This means instructing the child not to approach the dog while eating or sleeping. Goldens are also very friendly with pets, especially other dogs. With proper training, they can be trusted alone with smaller pets.

Ease of training

Since Goldens are considered to be among the smartest dog breeds, you can imagine they are very easy to train. They love carrying things in their mouth, so certain tricks such as fetching or bringing the paper will come naturally to them.
